CHLOE’S TOP TIPS

HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL ON YOUR FIRST DAY IN A NEW JOB!

As we begin to embrace a new sense of normal and companies resume the rest of what is left of 2020, companies have grown as have recruitment plans that they may wish to continue with well into the new year.

If you are one of those people that will be starting a new job in the next few weeks/months, then we have put together some ‘top tips’ ahead of your 1st day in a new position with your new employer!

Tip #1: Starting a new role during a pandemic

Whilst we enter into a new sense of ‘normal’ working, starting a new job during these uncertain times can be daunting. Our clients have put into place a number of measures to ensure a safe environment within the workplace following social distancing guidelines, minimising touch points and an increased level cleanliness across the board!

Many companies recommend bringing your own hand gel, although they are supplying this for their employees too, however you can ever have too much hand gel, right?!

Your start and finish times may also differ during the pandemic to limit the amount of people entering and leaving a building together, but definitely be sure to ask before your 1st day.

Tip #2: Prepare & Ask Questions

On your 1st day in a new role you are likely to be inundated with new information and listening to your new Manager / Co-Workers is definitely key. However, there is nothing to say that you can’t ask relevant questions. Asking both practical and general questions from the get-go will set you up for a successful career with the company and show you willingness, dedication and genuine interest in your new role and company.

Tip #3: Don’t be late!

First impressions count and are certainly not forgotten! Allow yourself plenty of time to get to your new job, without rushing and allow time for any delays along the way. There is nothing worse than getting somewhere completely new in a fluster or panic. There is also a thing as being ‘too early!’ We recommend arriving about 10-15 minutes before you are due, allowing you time to get used to your new surroundings or even time to grab a quick cuppa.

Tip #4: Don’t be shy

Settling into your new role and getting on with your co-workers is one of the biggest worries before starting a new role. Make sure to reach out, make and effort and introduce yourself to your new co-workers and involve yourself in conversations. Definitely don’t be shy and sit around all day by yourself, making effort it noticed and will go along way! Furthermore, there is certainly a fine line between confidence and arrogance, so make sure you don’t cross it on your first day!

Tip #5: Be Yourself

Think of ways you can be yourself, as trying to be someone you’re can be hard work and stressful in itself. You want to be the same person on day one as you are 6 months down the line when settled into your new role comfortably.

The last thing to remember is that while the first day at a new job is very important, you shouldn’t be too hard on yourself if it doesn’t go flawlessly, there is always tomorrow.
