The Institute of Digital Engineering (ISE) has published a plan for the modernisation of the UK’s manufacturing sector.

Industry leaders warned the country risked becoming a ‘digital dinosaur’ compared with top manufacturing countries such as the US, China, and Germany.

The industry has been using digital tools, such as CAD (computer-aided design) for decades. However, recent advances in connectivity, sensing and processing are assured to transform the way we develop and generally put things together.

Today, vast amounts of data can be captured and used to shape every stage of a product’s life cycle, for example, design and validation are done in virtual environments, with software doing much of the heavy lifting giving the Engineers more time to innovate.

Thanks to better connectivity and security, organisations and suppliers can work as one. There is less need for expensive physical prototypes, better products can be developed and made quickly with less waste and even better at a lower cost.

In the published plan, Project Start have noted the key points so you don’t have to!

NO NET ZERO ADVANTAGE WITHOUT DIGITALISATION:

The industry needs to break free of outdated architectures with nothing sustainable at its centre.

UK MANUFACTURERS NEED TO GET SMARTER:

The industry needs to accelerate its adoption of Al, machine learning and advancing training in those areas. The countries that are investing more in the Al and machine learning areas are the US, Germany, and China.

THE CUSTOMER IS RIGHT, NOW:

The customer will always challenge a business to stay relevant, with markets evolving rapidly and customer demand accelerating. Successful businesses will understand customer needs and this should be enough to alert their customers into the first stages of product design and positive manufacturing changes.

DATA-BLIND COMPANIES WILL BECOME EXTINCT:

Companies will only stay competitive and become valued members of supply chains if they recognise how data and new digital technologies are rewriting the rules of designing, testing and making new products.
